The Energy Information Administration says that the U.S. residential sector accounts for 21 percent of all energy consumption and is responsible for 20 percent of our country’s carbon emissions. Something as simple as leaving your lights on when they are not in use can increase your carbon footprint because the electricity and energy needed for your light to turn on is created through the burning of fossil fuels. Changing your electricity provider to solar power or wind power is a great way to make sure the amount of time your light is turned on does not have a drastic impact on your carbon footprint.
- Insulate and seal your home
- Turn off lights you’re not using
- Make energy efficiency a primary consideration when choosing a
new furnace, air conditioning unit, dishwasher, or refrigerator
